Many years ago I read a very nice and richly illustrated book that actually depicted pirate communities as a form of libertarian socialism. “They seized the means of maritime production and declared it to be common property of those who did its work”, is one of the quotes from it that I wrote down in my Driftwood notebook. But since I forgot that it might be good to be able to look up the same book again some time, I didn’t write down which book it was.
[Edit: That sentence is actually from Villains of all Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age by Marcus Rediker, which was quoted in this richly illustrated coffee table book I once read.]
