“Oil sticks” are deep fried sticks of dough (youtiao, “Chinese crullers”). In Cantonese dialect their name is yàuhjagwái (油炸鬼), which literally translates to “oil-fried-devil” (or “ghost”). Congee, perhaps already familiar to those who have read the Eva spinoff comics, is rice gruel or rice porridge, popular for breakfast and often eaten with different toppings, like pickled vegetables, nuts, eggs or meat. Willie cooks some meat toppings from that dead chicken.
She was kind of hoping she could cook only vegetarian food for the crew, but since she didn’t get to choose what they stocked up on in their pantry, it’s not going to happen …
