{"id":1215,"date":"2011-02-20T16:39:18","date_gmt":"2011-02-20T16:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kommiekomiks.com\/driftwood\/?p=1215"},"modified":"2023-02-04T21:17:21","modified_gmt":"2023-02-04T21:17:21","slug":"driftwood-8-39","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.black-pig-comics.com\/driftwood\/?p=1215","title":{"rendered":"Driftwood 8 39"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Update notice, February 28th:<\/strong> The next page will be late (not sure when it will be ready), because I&#8217;m having trouble with the script, and a lot of stress in my life &#8230; ;__;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p>Err &#8230; Yesterday, as I was reading (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/product-reviews\/3455082505\/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&amp;showViewpoints=1\">infamous<\/a> DDR translation of)\u00a0<em>Cours de Navigation des Gl\u00e9nans<\/em>, I had a severe &#8220;WELL, DUUUUH&#8221; moment.<\/p>\n<p>I realised that having the wheel in a sheltered place like this is not good at all! It should actually be in an exposed place on the stern deck. That&#8217;s because the helmsman can then easily tell the direction of the wind with his ears. The wind direction is the most important thing ever to keep track of when you sail, and you do this most easily by listening to the sound it makes.<\/p>\n<p>If the wheel is in a sheltered place like this, the wind is diffused by the surrounding structures, so I suppose you&#8217;d have to rely on watching the sails, the sea, etc. to tell the wind direction, and that&#8217;s obviously nowhere near as good as your ears. This seems so self-evident to me now that I can barely believe I never thought of that before.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know where I got the idea to put the wheel in this place. I&#8217;m pretty sure that no real sailing ships have ever had it like this. Oh well, that&#8217;s what happens when you start drawing a comic with a topic you don&#8217;t really know anything about at the tender age of 15 &#8230; V^(oo)^;V<\/p>\n<p>I suppose it&#8217;s something to consider, eventually, for the next part of the story &#8211; how much &#8220;creative licence&#8221; I should allow myself in correcting things like this.
